Friday 5th March is the World Day of Prayer 2021
In the Coker Ridge Benefice we have decided to make our service a virtual one, you can read about how you can be involved further down this page.
The service this year has been prepared by the women of Vanuatu. Vanuatu is a scatter of islands in the south-western Pacific, 1100 miles east of Australia. It is one of the first countries to start to pray on the Day of Prayer, helping to set off the wave of prayer which goes round the world. .
Discovered and explored by European seafarers, including James Cook, Vanuatu attracted missionaries, traders and those who wanted to acquire cheap labour. After 200 years of European administration it eventually became independent in 1980.
The WDP writing committee was formed from all the different denominations and islands, and met together to prepare a service about building on a strong foundation. They all understand about the need for safe buildings as the islands are in the South Pacific tropical cyclone zone. Cyclone Pam caused great devastation in 2015 and the islands were just beginning to recover when in April 2020 Cyclone Harold destroyed everything in its path. Even cyclone-adapted coconut trees were broken and battered.
Vanuatu is the most vulnerable country on earth to the effects of global climate change, despite being one of the world’s lowest emitters of greenhouse gas. In addition to the devastating cyclones Vanuatu’s people are at the mercy of rising sea temperatures, coral bleaching and droughts.
If you would like to join the Zoom service at 2.30 on Friday 5th March,
