Welcome to the Church of St Michael and All Angels' East Coker
Documents date from 1276 but there is evidence of Saxon stonework in the west wall & the Font is Norman. A visit is essential to appreciate fully the beauty, history & peace . Many come worldwide, drawn by our connections with TS Eliot whose ashes are buried in the Church & who named one of his Quartets after the village from which his ancestors emigrated to America. The Church also contains a memorial to William Dampier who was born in the village, circumnavigated the world four times & was the first Englishman to set foot in Western Australia in 1688.
